This weekend I’ll be having a Sale of all sorts of old, odd, fascinating, mundane, miscellaneous, and eclectic goods. Some years ago I inherited the family business of salvaging and antique dealing. I have a little bit of everything, and I’m trying to have a little less. For about 30 years, we cleaned out old houses, barns, businesses, and buildings. Although we cleared out buildings, you could say we emptied places of their past lives. A lot of goods built before computerized production were very much overbuilt, and so it lends itself to reuse and repurposing. This is something I take heart in, and I hope perhaps you will too. It may be that I’m just particularly sentimental, but I think everything that has been made has at one point had a human will engaged in its making, and as such I think that for anyone’s will or efforts to be wasted is particularly sad. However, that’s just one philosophical aspect of this endeavour. Salvaging, reusing, and repurposing is good for the environment, your wallet, and also the local economy. So I hope I’ll have something you can use.
